Changes to BC’s CleanBC Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate Program Affect Tesla Model 3/Y Eligibility

Significant Updates Impact Tesla Buyers

The Government of British Columbia has implemented changes to the CleanBC Go Electric Passenger Vehicle Rebate program, affecting Tesla buyers as no Tesla models now qualify for the rebate. According to a memo sent to dealers, obtained by Drive Tesla, the government has made two key updates to the program.

Reclassification and Price Cap Adjustments

The first change involves updating vehicle classifications, moving SUVs and station wagons from the ‘larger vehicles’ category to the ‘cars’ category. Additionally, the price cap for ‘cars’ has been reduced from $55,000 to $50,000.

This adjustment means that no Tesla vehicles will qualify for the up to $4,000 provincial rebate in BC. The lowest priced Tesla Model 3, the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) variant, is priced at $50,990, just above the new threshold. Similarly, all three variants of the Model Y (RWD, Long Range, and Performance) will no longer qualify due to the price cap on ‘cars’.

Effective Date and Grandfathering Period

The changes take effect at 11:59 PM PST on June 18, 2024. However, a 30-day grandfathering period allows rebates for vehicles delivered by July 17 if certain criteria are met, such as pre-ordering a ZEV or starting but not completing a ZEV sale.

The government stated these changes aim to target rebates towards middle-income families, given the increase in EV sales and available program funding.
