A New Record at Hockenheim
The Mercedes-AMG One, with its lap time of 1 minute and 38.5 seconds, has long been hailed as the fastest production car with a license plate around Hockenheim. However, a new contender has emerged that has redefined speed on this challenging German track. The McMurtry Speirling, a tiny but mighty electric vehicle, has shattered records by completing a lap of the Grand Prix (GP) course in just 1 minute and 24.4 seconds—a full 14.1 seconds faster than the AMG One.
An Impressive Achievement
This remarkable feat has earned the McMurtry Speirling the title of the fastest closed-wheel car around Hockenheim, even outperforming a DTM race car. It bested the previous record, set in 2020 during a Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters qualifying session, by 3.9 seconds. Despite the comparison being somewhat unfair—since the Speirling is a purpose-built, track-only machine with racing slicks—its performance is undeniably impressive.

Performance and Design
The McMurtry Speirling is a diminutive vehicle, measuring just 135.8 inches long, 62.2 inches wide, and 40.1 inches tall, yet it packs a punch with roughly 1,000 horsepower. Weighing less than 2,200 pounds, it outperforms even an ND-generation MX-5 in terms of power-to-weight ratio. The car is equipped with a 60-kWh battery that can be charged in under 20 minutes, providing enough power for 10 laps of Silverstone at full throttle.
The Price of Performance
Owning this cutting-edge EV comes at a steep price—£895,000 (about $1.13 million). Only 100 units of the McMurtry Speirling will be produced, with deliveries expected to begin in 2025. Despite the hefty price tag, this vehicle represents a new benchmark in electric performance, proving that even the smallest cars can deliver record-breaking speed.
