As Ford expands its EV line to include the Ford F-150 Lightning, it’s also making an upgrade to its battery technology with nickel-free, energy-dense lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
Drive Tesla Canada reports that in a Q1 earnings call earlier this year, CEO Jim Farley talked about Ford’s plans to “quickly” bring these batteries to the e-Transit commercial van, Mustang Mach-E, and F-150 Lightning–essentially Ford’s entire first generation of electric vehicles.
LFP batteries have a few significant advantages over lithium ion:
- Cheaper, since they don’t incorporate ever-more-expensive nickel components
- Can be charged to 100% of capacity without shortening battery lifespan
- Energy-dense and perfect for low-range EVs, so that Ford can prioritize long-range lithium ion batteries for their increased production of long-range models
