What is the real-world range of an electric vehicle? It’s not a question with a straightforward answer–EV range is affected by everything from temperature swings to speed to traffic conditions. EPA estimates, while standardized and helpful, are just that, estimates–so we were excited to find this detailed breakdown of real-world highway EV range by InsideEVs.
We love it when we get more data that makes it easier to evaluate electric vehicle performance on real streets. What’s interesting about the data gathered by InsideEVs is that while some models underperform their estimates, others significantly outperform them, covering more miles than we think they will. And unlike ICE cars, EVs have a reputation for having better mileage in the city. That’s good news for consumers!
The big winner in this test is the 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Range, with an EPA estimated range of 520 miles, and a real-world range of 500–only a 4.0% difference, and 190 miles farther than Inside EVs drove the Tesla Model 3 Long Range last year (310 miles). But note that Lucid’s huge numbers are based on the use of the older 2170 battery numbers still used in Tesla Model 3. Kudos to Lucid for their superior battery management design; nevertheless, it might be a bit too early to count out Tesla from upgrading their version of that design work. (…to say nothing of whether or not Lucid will have access to 4680 batteries sooner, or later.)
